Interview: Photographer Piergiorgio Lauria (Italy)

Can you tell us a little about you?

I was born in Rome and I 58 (fifty eight years old). I work in a big company and specifically I deal with imobiliary management.

Every day I live between numbers and counts. I always felt the need, feeding various interests,to find my own dimension that would allow me to express myself and relate to others, with common goals.

How and when did you get into photography?

I felt in photography when I was 20. I remembar I bought my first analog kit and I started to gain experiences. Then, when digital camera born, I was confused ; but I my passion felt in Olympus/Panasonic mirrorless system. I need a light and little camera because I photographed especially during travels or in urban street contests. About four years ago I decided to follow photography courses and workshops; I really wanted to improved my studies and know Masters and collegues. So, I started to study at studio and I really like this kind of photography. From that moment I preferred this kind of photography because it needs the complete control of the lights. So, I follow a photographic Association and I share with the other members the events and the studio.

What does photography mean to you?

Photograpy allows to give our own emotions and to fix them; so, it can tells stories for images. I feel myself free when I photograpy; and the camera is instrument between myself and the world.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

I like the portrait Photography ; and I try to approach to the model and to her world. I like to transmit emotions and upsets. I like the pictures in which the body or the face transmit something particular. I'm just studying a fine Art style; this tecnique involves me more in post production Photography.

Where do you get inspiration from?

I have not a particular inspiration. Sometimes I remember a particular dress, so it could be the theme of the set; or I remember some strange scene seen in the street... Generally web images could be another source of inspiration.

Do you think in advance what you want in the picture ?

Generally the project is mine; I choose the staff members (model and mua) and the clothes when the idea is clean in my mind. When I take part in model sharing, I try immediately to observe the set and the model; then I try to ' have a dialogue' with the model. I consider the events a chance to enter in contact with others collegues and new; model sharings give the opportunity to improve the speed and the improvisation. I prefer to work 'face to face' with the model in my project because I study everything, from the project to every picture.

Studio, on location or both?

I prefer to work at studio, but sometimes outdoor too.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

I'm a hobbyist; but I try to make my own project just like a professional photographer.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

The most memorable session was the first one I managed alone.Firsty it was not simple, then I passed the initial difficulties. Generally I could say that every set is memorable when pictures are well done. If everything is ok,I'm full of energy and I can transmit my energy to the model, which follow me. She realizes whant I want ; so, I can read her heart.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

I use Olympus system and I have a 14-150 zoom; I use others full lents in different sets.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

I advice to approach every kind of Photography; then, according to the personal own inclination, everybody improves the favorite kinds. It's very important the knowledge and the use of tools to be more creative.

What do you think of our new magazine?

The magazine is very interesting for the high standarts ; and the images could be another source of inspiration. Online access allows to reach many people everywhere and to give a photographic culture.
