Interview: Photographer Marek Kamiński (Poland)

Can you tell us a little about you?

I was born and live in Poland. I'm an amateur photographer. I mainly take portraits, which I enjoy the most, but I also do product photography.

How and when did you get into photography? My adventure with photography started a long time ago. As a teenager I became interested in analog photography, but it was rather a youthful curiosity than a passion. About 7 years ago I bought my first digital SLR camera and fell in love with photography once again.

What does photography mean to you?

For me, photography is an escape from reality. Thanks to it, I am in another world. I tried many genres of photography but none of them gave me as much satisfaction as portrait sessions. This is one of the few activities that can satisfy two extreme needs - the desire to meet new people and a huge desire to be completely alone. I love meeting new people and sometimes I have the impression that photos are just a nice side effect of all this. Something that is created somewhere in between the conversations, smiles and mutual exchange of insights. I would say that taking pictures is just a two-hour detox from everything.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

A style in photography? I don't think I ever want to find it. It's a bit of a stop in development for me. And I want to develop and look for new things all the time. To discover the unexplored, so I hope I will never find my style.

Where do you get inspiration from? There can be many sources of inspiration. You can learn from other photographers, but also from painters, musicians or filmmakers. And in this way you can develop your sensitivity and photographic awareness. It often happens to me to analyze photos in terms of the lighting used. To sum up, any way is good, the most important aspect is to develop constantly.

Do you think in advance what you want in the picture?

I would say yes and no at the same time. I do sessions that are completely planned out, where everything happens according to a predetermined scenario. Starting with the make-up, through the lighting and ending with the posing of the model. But sometimes I just want to be completely spontaneous without any plan or limitations.

Studio, on location or both?

I take a lot of pictures in the studio, because I love flash light. I fell in love with it a long time ago, but I work outside as well. More and more often I combine those two things and use flash light outside the studio.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

I am an absolute amateur and I treat photography as a hobby.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

This is a difficult question. Every session is unique and brings new experiences and sensations. Each time I get incredible pleasure from it. I meet new people and when I manage to create a unique photograph the satisfaction doubles.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

Nikon has always been. But it's not that important to me. And my favorite lens is probably Nikon Nikkor 85 1.8

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

I am not a very competent person to give advice on this subject, because I take photography only as a hobby.

Whatdo you think of our new magazine?

I am very impressed with your magazine and the artistic level of the photos posted. It is also worth noting that such projects allow novice photographers and professionals to present themselves to a wider audience.
