Interview: Photographer Kat von Rose (Poland)

Can you tell us a little about you?

I'm a multidisciplinary visual artist but my main categories of art is photography, sometimes video art and paintings.

How and when did you get into photography?

At the beginning I was trying to take pictures when I was about 15, but I had my first SLR since when I was 18. I was intrigued by the possibilities of photography, how to build final result from the vision in my head, how to work with equipment to make it works. So I asked myself more and more questions about what else I can experience in photography? and I was looking for more and more new answers.

What does photography mean to you?

It’s like my own language which I can communicate to world around.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

My photography is balancing between reality and unreal world. I like to playing with shadows, building mood by different styles of light. I often use self-made props.

Where do you get inspiration from?

Everywhere. It’s so many things and places where I can find inspiration.

Morning fog, long sunset, forest, people on the street in traffic jam.

The best space for unreal inspiration are my dreams, nightmares. Imagination is one of my main tools. I like to finding inspiration in different cultures for example Eastern Asia, but not only. I am constantly looking for inspiration.

A hundreds of my ideas was founded in fine arts, especially renaissance paintings gave me a lot of amazing solutions for portraits in photography.

Do you think in advance what you want in the picture?

Yes, I do. Mostly it depends what kind of vision I have. Usually I like to planning. I have plan for everything at all,every detail. But from another side I love to being spontaneous as well! I'm trying to use all resources around me, creativity. It’s really depends from main idea and what I want to show in the picture, catch a impression, capture the moment, tell a story, or create completely unreal vision balancing on almost theatrical gestures.

Studio, on location or both?

Both, because both can offer completely different feelings.

I'm flexible to feel comfortable shooting everywhere.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

Technically paid professional and I am grateful for the fact that I can consider myself as a paid professional and everytime when I receive new commission I’m trying to keep feeling in myself like I’m still hobbyist.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

Every session had a lot of meaning for me. Every time when I had session some magic was happend. It’s too hard to choose only one memory.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

Nikon. Type of lens since 10mm- 80 mm, sometimes 70-200mm.

In the case of favourite lens I am big fan of Tamron, Sigma and Zeiss.

I like a lot old schools lens. In my collection I have really old version of Leica, Pentax and Helios, but I’m trying to not limit my creative vision with the type of equipment, technically I can take photos with everything.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

Work hard,listen to yourself, never look back, but learn from your mistakes. Keep developing.

I love it! It’s amazing platform to share passion of creation for photographers, models, make up artists and designers, so many talented people in one place! I like the whole magazine concept.
