Interview: Photographer Dorota Odolińska (Poland)
Can you tell us a little about you?
My name is Dorota. I was born and live in Szczecin. I come from Poland. I graduated from the art school, where my adventure with artistic world began, which is still very close to me today. I met wonderful people there and made friendships that have lasted until today. I also finished architectural studies, but professionally I was not satisfed. I am currently involved in baby photography, including newborn photography.
How and when did you get into photography?
I was looking for my way for a long time...At the age 31, I became a mother. As a result of our daughter's illness, I did not work professionally. I think that's where it all started, because my first model was my daughter. I was amazed how photogenic and just beautiful she is. I wanted everyone to see in the picture, what I see when I look at her. And so I started training, reading a lot, working at night on photo processing, I got totally hooked.
What does photography mean to you?
It's a lifestyle for me. I think, that I have a built-in photo system. When watching a movie or an advertisement, I pay attention to the framing, what is in the background and what kind of lighting they used. I wake up and fall asleep thinking about photography.
Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.
The style is hard to define unequivocally, I am constantly looking for it and experimenting. In my photography I like fairy-tale atmosphere, I think that they fit children perfectly. I love color and use it too much sometimes, but that's who I am.
Where do you get inspiration from?
I have always been inspired by nature. I love looking at landscapes and their variability depending in the season. The golden hour in photography is pure beauty, wonderful sunsets, it fascinates me. I am also inspired by impressionist painting in which the play of light and shadow was very important, the fleetingness of the momment and emotions.
Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?
I define myself as a professional photographer. However, I belive that you need to train in this profession constantly. You need to be up to date with fashion and current trends.
Do you think in advance what you want in the picture?
As a child photographer, emotions are important to me. Children are amazing, spontaneous and sincere, their company always touches me. I would like to capture the moment when the child is himself. It is not an easy task, children are smart and you have to earn your trust in them. When I get them, I create frames that are very pleasing to the eye.
Studio, on location or both?
I have a studio in my house, very professionally equipped, additionally I take photo in the open air. In the studio, you can plan everything with details. Outdoors is more demanding. But i like them both, I think working in different places makes me better and better every day.
What has been your most memorable session and why?
Each session is unique to me. I am happy with spontaneous smiles of children. One girl, after the photo session, said that she loves me, it was very touching. Atmosphere is really important. That's whay it's worth creating relationships with your little models.
Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?
I work on Sony A7III. For me best lens is sigma art 50mm. It works well both in the studio and outdoors, generally it is a very universal and bright lens.
What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?
If you can advise someone at all...I would say you have to be self-denial and do it for yourself. Very important to me was the support of family and friends.
What do you think of our new magazine?
I have known your magazine for a relatively short time. You can certainly inspire yourself, meet creators from all over the world. Thank you very much for the opportunity to participate in your project.
