Interview: Photographer Bożena Dziąbor (Poland)
Can you tell us a little about you?
Hello, my name is Bożena and I am a photographer from Poland.
I am a German philologist by education, but art, fine arts, painting and photography are my great passions. Since I was a child, I have always dreamed of working in art professionally. Thankfully dreams came true and now I can finally do what I truly love. And it's wonderful…
How and when did you get into photography?
I have always taken photos everywhere, the camera has always been at hand, especially since the birth of my children. For a long time I used simple compact cameras that were very convenient for me, because they were very easy to use but very soon I felt they began to limit me. I felt that their simplicity was not enough.
And finally, 2017, I decided to do something for myself, for my soul and I spent the savings on the first camera – Canon 6D and 85 lens, many courses and trainings and … I got crazy about it. I have been fascinated with photography ever since. But I still feel that I need more knowledge and experience.
What does photography mean to you?
It's my whole world now. I think photographically, I look photographically, I constantly discover the possibilities of light and colors. Photography is the art of seeing, noticing and a huge field for creativity. It is an absolutely magical world.
Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.
It's a hard question. I think it is easier for people to judge my artistic style. When I asked my dear friend to describe my photos she defined it as fine-art and retro photography.
Where do you get inspiration from?
Inspiration comes unexpectedly at different times and in different places. Sometimes an item in the store may awaken my imagination, sometimes it's a music video, sometimes it's a frame from a movie or a song. Of course, an amazing source of inspiration is the internet and other photographers' publications.
Do you think in advance what you want in the picture?
Always. First there is a plan, a vision, a photo is created in my mind. I am not a reportage photographer. I don't like catching moments at celebrations or events. I like to plan frames, visit places where the session is going to take place. I like to create a base for the session in my mind. However not everything can be fully planned. Sometimes the idea turns out to be wrong, and sometimes a wonderful frame might be created, different from the previously planned one. And these are wonderful photographic surprises.
Studio, on location or both?
During these few years of intense work, I really love the portrait. I love both – the studio and outdoor portrait - and it would be really hard for me to say which of them is my favourite one.
Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?
Photography has been my hobby for a long time and is still a wonderful passion, but at the same time I do a lot of sessions for clients, so both terms fit me. However, I need to add that I’m always trying to find a little time to broaden my horizons and accomplish the goals that I set for myself.
What has been your most memorable session and why?
Each photo session is an unique experience and a challenge for me. I prepare myself thoroughly for each one. Each session is very emotional, wheater it a session with a child or an adult. However, I do not think I would be able to point out this particular session that affected me the most.
Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?
Canon. I have been a Canon R6 owner for several months - I fell in love with it almost immediately! My favorite lens is the Sigma Art 105.
What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?
Listen to what your heart tells you. Appreciate your talent - not everyone has it, so you need to take advantage of it. And act! Get out of your comfort zone and try! Learn from your mistakes! Do not give up! Search and discover!
What do you think of our new magazine?
A great idea, new opportunities for artists and a wonderful source of inspiration. And here I would like to thank you very much for inviting me to take part in this interview. Thank you for showing my art work to your readers.
