Interview: Photographer Anubhav Sood (Poland)
Can you tell us a little about you?
I am a seasoned Indian photographer currently residing in Poland, with over a decade of active engagement in the profession since 2010. Commencing my career in India, I have since transitioned to capturing moments throughout Europe. Through my lens, I strive to encapsulate and convey the intricate moods often overlooked in the fabric of our daily existence.
How and when did you get into photography?
My early immersion in photography stemmed from frequent visits to my grandfather, a seasoned professional in the field. During our vacations, I found myself consistently surrounded by cameras, his artistic endeavors, and an array of captivating photographs. This inadvertent exposure undoubtedly played a pivotal role in nurturing my passion for the art of photography.
What does photography mean to you?
Photography serves as my sanctuary, a realm where I transcend reality, weaving scenes reminiscent of cinematic grandeur. I am captivated by the intricacies of the craft, meticulously dissecting lighting techniques to either emulate or infuse with my unique aesthetic signature.
Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.
My journey in photography has undergone a significant evolution, notably transitioning from night photography capturing moody street lights to a style influenced by the atmospheric paintings of Edward Hopper and the meticulously staged scenes of Gregory Crewdson. This shift underscores the transformative power of perspective and color in eliciting emotive responses from viewers.
Where do you get inspiration from?
Inspiration, for me, is like a kaleidoscope of creativity, forever shifting and evolving. It's sparked by the intricate dance of light and shadow in a fellow photographer's masterpiece, the vibrant strokes of a painting that whisper tales of distant lands, or even the raw potential of a nondescript location waiting to be transformed into a stage for my imagination. Sometimes, as I step into a new space, I can't help but wonder, "If I could capture this moment, what story would I tell?" It's in those moments of reverie that the seeds of inspiration are sown, whether or not my lens ever meets that particular scene. It's the art of possibility, painting drafts of inspiration in the canvas of my mind.
Do you think in advance what you want in the picture?
It's common for preconceived ideas and planned shots to encounter obstacles or not meet expectations during actual shooting sessions. Consequently, I frequently find myself adapting and formulating new ideas on-site to ensure the desired outcome aligns with the project's objectives.
Studio, on location or both?
Certainly! Here's a more polished version: I have a preference for utilizing pre-made sets or seeking out studios equipped with them. However, I've recently transitioned towards working with authentic locations such as garages and airports. These settings offer a raw, unfiltered backdrop, yielding a myriad of potential outcomes
Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?
I strive to maintain the integrity of my craft by preserving its essence as a hobby, even when taking on paid commissions. While this approach may occasionally pose challenges and limit creative freedom, I remain open to professional opportunities in photography without actively pursuing them, as my primary goal is to nurture and sustain my creative passion.
What has been your most memorable session and why?
Certainly. Here's a more polished version: It's challenging to pinpoint my most memorable experience due to the consistent satisfaction I derive from my work. However, one recent standout moment was orchestrating a meticulously planned airport shoot, a project I had envisioned for over two years. Achieving seamless coordination and execution was a significant professional milestone
Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?
Certainly. Here's a refined version: I view a camera as a utilitarian instrument, prioritizing functionality over brand allure or feature abundance. My current tool of choice has been the EOS RP, Canon's entry-level mirrorless model, for the past four years. I remain content with its performance and have yet to feel compelled to upgrade When it comes to lens, my current favourite is sigma 24-70 Art but the lens can change based on requirements of the shot
What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?
In the past five years, the photography industry has experienced a significant boom, resulting in a saturated market. For newcomers, it's crucial to prioritize the development of a unique style and personal brand. With photography often being a sole source of income, standing out is imperative; otherwise, one risks blending into the vast sea of competitors. Stress can undoubtedly accompany this profession, particularly when livelihood depends on it. However, instead of fixating solely on equipment, aspiring photographers should channel their energy into creating compelling work that resonates with audiences.
What do you think of our new magazine?
The new magazine is truly excelling in its mission to promote and connect photographers, while also serving as a wellspring of inspiration for individuals striving to discover their own unique style. Through its comprehensive coverage and engaging features, it provides valuable insights and resources for both seasoned professionals and aspiring photographers alike. By fostering a sense of community and collaboration, it not only celebrates the diverse talents within the photography world but also empowers individuals to explore their creativity and expand their horizons.
