Interview: Photographer Etay Appelberg (Israel)
Can you tell us a little about you?
My name is Etay Appelberg , I’m 42 years old and I live in Israel. By day I work as a director and video editor (mostly at promotionals and commercials) and by night I’m a photographer and photoshop addict :-) These days I mostly shoot fine art , environmental portraits and artistic nude. How and when did you get into photography?
All my life I was around cameras , from shooting landscapes as a kid to shooting documentary as a student in the Art Academy 2002 i bought my first SLR Nikon F65 , in 2006 upgrading it to my first DSLR - the Nikon D80 ( still using her) which than I started learning professional studio photo-graphy which later developed into what I’m doing today.
What does photography mean to you?
It's a tool to bring to life everything that goes in my imagination.
Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.
I have a number of styles that I focus on, Boudoir, Portraits, Artistic Nude, Fantasy, Dark Art...trying to create new worlds within my photographic frame while challenging my limitations .
Where do you get inspiration from?
Inspiration is something that constantly surrounds us, constantly renewed,Just trying to stay up to date. The problem I see is motivation, as Casey Neistat's (Youtube vlogger) says 'Do What You Can't' that is the best Inspirational Message ever.
Do you think in advance what you want in the picture?
60% yes , and 40% i never know.
Studio, on location or both?
Both, I have no problem shooting outside or indoors , If needed I bring some light sources with me (either strobes or LEDs) and when of course lets not forget… photoshop.
Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?
I do it for my art as a hobbyist but also get paid for pro work. Luckily , I have the option to choose which work I would like to take.
What has been your most memorable session and why?
Workshop in Prague of a good friend and the wonderful photographer Pini Hamou (inspiration), three days of photography disconnected from the world.
Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?
