Interview: Photographer Nicola D. Furnari (Italy)

Can you tell us a little about you?

I’m Nicola Davide Furnari a Rome based photographer, born in 86. Too much hobbies as music (play guitar), sea and diving, I&T and nature. When not doing fashion or glamour pics, I do astrophotography and night landscape.

How and when did you get into photography?

I started to photography since 2000 when I was 14 with analog camera and with the first digital DSLR. My father has lot of old camera and photography stuffs still working.

What does photography mean to you?

It’s a way to describe beauty and elegance. I’m not talking about only models, but also nature and the amazing things that we can find along the way.

Where do you get inspiration from?

Every day I see thousand of photos from my idols, as Sean Archer or Dan Hecho, through their channels, so IG or 500px. Beauty must be trained.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

When I take a picture I want to describe a moment, a real one. Every photoset is planned and anything is random. I shoot only in natural light with no external flash or reflectors because I think that we have to frozen what our eyes can view in that moment without arctifact.

Think you in advance what you want in the picture?

I always try to choose the best spot, with the best model, with the best outfit can fits in that case because I think that the environment in witch the photo take place is important as the main subject, so never improvise.

Studio, on location or both?

I prefer to take pics outdoor because It’s more tricky: light can changes suddenly and you need to be ready in every situations. By the way Studio is mandatory when you have to get particoular pics.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

Both, because I don’t want photography to be my first “job” because in this way I can choose without worries what I want to do with photography and keep alive my wild spirit.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

I’ve done thousand of sessions. I think that the one made in Sicily last summer on the beach during sunset inside a natural reserve with rocks on the back is one of my best session ever. The model was totally in the mood. The job was great.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

Nikon, now with D850 and 35mm 1.4 Sigma Art for half body and 85mm Nikkor 1.4 for entire body and close up.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

I think that they should be focused on a specific genre instead of doing everything.

What do you think of our new magazine?

It’s an amazing magazine. It’s remarkable to give the opportunity to photographers to be featured and to share their works. I want to thank you all.
