Interview: Photographer Pernille Marcheschi (Denmark)

Can you tell us a little about you?

My name is Pernille, also known as Pearl. I’m a 30 year-old photographer from Denmark, who recently moved to LA. My education is focused on business and sales, which comes in handy when you want to establish own business as a photographer. I started out as a retoucher before becoming a photographer. I love being creative, drawing and music. My dream is to be a world famous photographer working from remote places around the globe.

How and when did you get into photography?

When I was 14 years old I got my first camera, we had a school trip to Iceland and the year after to Greenland. I have this huge love for nature, and I love photographing beautiful landscape photos. After modeling for some years and being really creative with drawing I got changed directions to become a retoucher. It was while working as a retoucher that I my ideas started to grow bigger, and was moved to bring them to life. One of my favourite photographers to work with pushed me to follow my dreams.

What does photography mean to you?

It’s my way to express my creative ideas and dreams. To create and capture memories and thoughts with photography that would impress people tomorrow.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

My style is crisp and direct. I catch the essence of whose in front of me and then I enhance it with angles and use of light to bring a heightened sense of the person’s energy and emotional state, always sprinkled with a sense of fashion and beauty.

Think in advance what you want in the picture?

Yes, I always have a vision of what I expect from the pictures, but I also think there should be room for improvising

Where do you get inspiration from?

I really like to go for a walk around the city or in the nature, and when I a spot a location out ideas pop up into my mind. It can also happen when I see some people, if they have a special look. But mostly my ideas come from movies, it’s like a small seed got planted in my brain, and grows bigger.

Studio, on location or both?

Mostly I do on location, but I worked in a studio when I lived in Denmark.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

I see my self as a paid photographer, who has an eye and love for what I’m doing. With time I can call myself a professional Photographer.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

It must be the shoot I just had in Joshua Tree, which will soon be published. The idea behind the shoot was to cross fashion with wild nature. Unfortunately you have to wait until it’s published.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

Definitely Nikon, and my favourite lens is 85mm 1,4

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

Just do it, believe in yourself an your vision. Even when you feel everything is against you, it’s important that you believe in yourself. Other than… network!
