Interview: Photographer Michał dąbrowski (Poland)

Can you tell us a little about you?

I’m a 30-year-old Polish, father of two. I’ve spent half of my adult life working for big companies and one day I decided to change it so I quit my job to start to realize my dreams.

How and when did you get into photography?

I’ve started about two years ago. My father was a photographer and when I was a teenager he was trying to inspire me and give some lessons about photography but I’ve rebbelled against this and haven’t listen to his advices. After a few years it occurred to me that photography is the thing I want to do in my life.

What does photography mean to you?

For me this is the way to get all of my deepest thoughts out of my head. If you manage to open up to yourself and to people you are photographing you will find out what is inside of you. Besides, it’s a pleasure to work with people, to observe their emotions and reactions.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

Sometimes i think that my style is no style, i mean I have no such thing as my own one. I am doing whatever i want at the time. Sometimes I like soft light, sometimes hard. People that I am photographing often define style of particular session. I don’t like ordinary, „nice” photos. I like to bring something interesting, curious to get the attention.

Where do you get inspiration from?

The most of my inspirations ... from the art, everyday I’m watching thousands of photos, pictures, paintings. Everything can be an inspiration, sometimes it’s a lyrics of the song, sometimes its a place, a building.

Think you in advance what you want in the picture?

It depends. Sometimes my photo is well planned and the effect perfectly illustrates my idea. On the other hand, sometimes its the other way around.

Studio, on location or both?

Both

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

I think I’m somewhere in the middle. Actually it’s not very high standard of living but I can, however, pay my bills.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

I remember all of my sessions and i don’t have the most memorable one. I have a sentiment for most of my sessions because i’ve great unique relation with every person I’m working with.

What has been the biggest source of inspiration in your work?

I think the most inspiration for me is the work of people like Helmut Newton, Irving Penn, Jurgen Teller, Irving Penn etc.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

Fuji and 18-55 kit fuji lens

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

To go out on a limb and give 100% of yourself to your business

What do you think of our new magazine?

I have looked through it several times, a lot of work has made an amazing impression on me
