Interview: Photographer Mike Nyembo (Switzerland)

Tell us something about yourself.

My name is, I am 25 years old and I am a Fashion/Beauty Photographer from Geneva, Switzerland.

How and when did you get into photography?

I started photography very randomly. I bought my first camera when I turned 21 years old. I wanted to have good quality pictures for that day. Later on that week, one of my best friend needed some CV pictures. We went to my house and used a white wall to take the pictures. He was impressed by the quality of the photos. As result, he asked me to do a photoshooting with him. At first, I was skeptical about it because it was not something that I ever done before. My friend shared the pictures on Facebook and I got a lot of good feedbacks. That is how I started photography.

What does photography mean to you?

Photography means the world to me. I can express myself in ways that I cannot with words. The feeling of capturing a beautiful instant is priceless. Being able to make people happy with my photographs makes me feel really good.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

I do not really know how to describe it. However, I can tell you that on most of my pictures, you can feel the relationship and the complicity that I had with the model is very present. I like to have my pictures very clean and sharp.

Where do you get inspiration from?

I get mostly my inspiration from listening to music and watching music videos. Music plays a big part in my job.

Think you in advance what you want in the picture?

Always. Visualisation is very important because it will keep you on the right track toward what you trying to get. I feel that without knowing what you want, you will eventuallty get lost.

Studio, on location or both?

I like “studio” for beauty photos but I prefer “location” for fashion photos.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

A paid professional but also a hobbyist because I am not only doing it for the money. I do a lot of collaborations and test shots as well.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

I would be my fashion editorial for Ellements Magazine because it was my very first magazine publication. I have planned everything from the location, outfit, model and even the poses.

What has been the biggest source of inspiration in your work?

My biggest source of inspiration in my work would be watching pictures from other photographers in order to reach their level and to go above it.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

Canon! My favorite lens is the 100mm marco L 2.8 and the 24-105mm of Canon.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

It is a rough industry. If you not willing to do some sacrifices you won’t get very far.

What do you think of our new magazine?

I think it is a cool magazine. The quality of the pictures that I have seen is very good. I think you should be a little bit more active on social media then it would be fine.
